Oh my God! I cant believe Im sitting here typing this. That was the
closest call Ive ever had. I think my whole life passed before my
eyes. As I sit here my knees and hands are shaking so hard I can
barely type. My throat feels like theres a golf ball in it. And you
know that feeling when the adrenylene rush wears off the one that
starts in the lowest pit of your stomach and seems to pull your bowels
right down to your toes well I got it! I was on my way home from work
tonight driving the split semicountry highway that leads to my
little oasis in nowheresville. I had just changed the cd from Van
Morrison to the Greatful Dead and was getting into "A Touch of Grey"
when the stupid thing started skipping. I was fumbling for the eject
button when something pulled my attention back to the road. Jesus Mary
and Joseph! There was an eighteen wheeler coming in the other
direction skidding sideways and just hitting the grassy median. The
median at this point of the highway is about twenty feet wide with no
guard rails. It dips in the center to about six feet below road level.
As it hit the shoulder a tremendous cloud of dirt and rocks and clumps
of sod exploded into the air in front of me. The next few seconds
seemed to last an eternity. I didnt know which way to go. To veer to
the right meant certain death with a shear drop of forty to fifty feet
off that side of the road. To try and get around him on the other side
if I made it would put me into other oncoming traffic. Through the
near blackness of sputum thrown up in advance of the truck I could
just make out its image starting to tip as it hit the small
embankment coming up onto my side of the road. The crash of rocks and
sod hitting my car was so deafening that I thought Id collided with
the truck. It was at this point that I experienced that life flashing
thing. To tell you the truth I dont really remember how I got around
it(hows that for scared!) but I think I threaded my way between the
truck and the cliff. There was a thunderous explosion as the truck
landed sideways and twisted on the road behind me. I couldnt look
back. I drove on knuckles white on the wheel heart in my throat. I
dont remember much of the rest of the drive home and didnt even
bother to check the car for damage when I parked it. Its about half a
class of scotch since I got home and the shaking is finally starting
to subside. I just heard my wifes key in the door. Right now I just
want to hold her tight and smell her hair. Shes coming upstairs. Why
doesnt she answer me? She just walked right past me! What the..
