I just would like to discuss the AvroArrow aircraft and all
the contraversy surrounding it¸ It seems that this incredible aircraft
failed only because of political conflicts and lack of public support¸
The Arrow even by todays standards is an advanced aircraft yet the
political agenda was so inflexable and politicians so spineless as to
cower in fear¸ This fear was not only of reprocusions from the United
States but also from the very people that put the politicians in power
the Canadian people¸ When will Canada take pride in their technology
and industry? It may just be that because our Prime Ministers will
not just come out with the truth and let the people decide for them
selves but instead try to "protect" the public from such things¸ This
is the reason that the people of Canada have developed so much mis
trust of the government¸ Hopefully one day the Canadian government
will look to its people for support and educate them as to whats
going on in the country¸ This brings us back to the Arrow did the
Canadian people know that all the money invested in the project could
have and probably would have made Canada a leader in the Aerospace
industry no¸ Did the government endorse and promote the project no¸
Did the people know that the five aircraft that were built and were
virtually ready for flight testing were to be cut up into so many
pieces of useless metal no¸ Did the people know that the great minds
that were involved in the project produced an aircraft that not even
the Americans believed could be built no¸ But the government did
tell the people how much money had been used and how because of
ICBMs (InterContinental Ballistic Missiles) the Avro was supposedly
already obsolete¸ It seems that the government was out to serve not
the people but their own narrow minded agenda¸ The USA did exactly
what Canada should have done they embraced the great people involved
in the Arrow project and took them into the NASA program¸ Then the US
put a man on the moon and now builds the worlds greatest military and
civilian aircraft¸
The only hope is that with the release of the movie enough
Canadians as well as a few Americans will see how important research
and development is to their countries and will continue to and im
prove upon their support of the scientists in their communities¸
Not only did Canada miss out on a great opportunity but the Americans
also missed out on a great aircraft¸ Lets hope this is never to be
repeated¸ My hat comes off to the resourceful Americans and I must
admit that at times I am almost ashamed of some of my fellow Canadians¸
One last thought it seems that as easily as the people loose
sight so do the politicians¸ It is not the policies or the propa
ganda that make a politician but it is the people and the politician
as an individual¸ If the people dont understand the importance of
something it is up to those in power to explain it then and only
then can the voters make an informed decision¸ The politician cant
always expect to be popular but they can always make themselves under
stood¸
