My favorite character is Eugene Witla in Theodore Dreiser’s novel the "Genius"¸ The book follows his rise from childhood to artist¸ Along the way he has a mental colapse and works on a railroad to regain his sanity¸ I sometimes think about that when I tire of my own work and do something physical to counterbalance mental frustration¸ Eugene is a sensualist who makes some decisions that cause pain to others¸ He abandons his devoted‚ yet simplistic wife for a younger infatuation¸ She is a sad character who comes from his home town but has not grown in the same ways he has¸ The book also takes you into the world of advertising and artists in the early part of the century which is quite interesting¸ Like many of Dreiser’s works‚ the main character rises and then falls¸ He ends up in a tenament in the Bronx at the end!
