I grow ever more concerned about the direction of our national political system¸ As E¸J¸ Dionne noted in Why Americans Hate Politics‚ the political parties tend to draw the polity to the extremes of the spectrum in an attempt to consolidate their own political bases¸ As a result‚ rather than pursuing the politics of consensus and unity‚ our leaders pursue politics of division and continue to draw the polity apart by debating about "rights politics" issues as abortion and gay rights‚ about which there is little middle ground¸ I fear that the future of the American political process is no better than the past¸ The campaign finance system will likely perpetuate the two party establishment‚ and provide little opportunity for other voices to make themselves heard in the process¸
