My favourite character is John Gibbon even though I get annoyed
about people who rave about how great Bobby Lee or Tom Jackson were¸
Its just that Gibbon is the sort of unassuming soldier who rose
from some fame in the prewar army having written the Artillerists
Manual to eventual Corps command in the Army of the Potomac¸ He
didnt seek glory like some he just got on with his work¸
Consider Groveton for instance¸ Apart from real Civil War buffs its
mostly unknown but soem remarkable things happened there¸ First
Gibbon and the Iron Brigade fought the cream of Jacksons corps to a
standstill¸ They were ambushed but they deployed successfully and
gave the Confedreates a hell of a licking¸ I think thats the first
time (maybe apart from Kernstown) that Jacksons boys really got a
licking¸ More importantly though it was at Groveton that Dick Ewell
lost his leg and many people say that it was the loss of that leg that
made him the cautious sort of commander who would not attack
cemetary Hill on day 1 at Gettysburg¸ Of course anyone whos studied
the matter properly knows that no Confederate commander (not even
Jackson) could have taken that hill at that time but the point stands¸
Ewell was beaten at Groveton and was never the same again¸ And who was
responsible? Gibbon¸
