When reading this you will have to bear in mind that it is coming from a person living in a democracy but not the U.S.A.‚ therefore some differences in outlook may appear. Due to your open press it is well known that these aims are not always achieved; however‚ the fact that the standard has been written down provides a means of measuring performance and gives people somethintg to aspire to. An recent example would be what is known in Australia as the Travel Rorts (is this an Australioan English word? ­ it means rip off)where federal politicians of all parties have been claiming more than their entitlement for travel and avccomodation. I am not talking about a few dollars slipped in to an expense account but tens of thousands per person per year. This has come about due to these figures NOT being a matter of public record. The information was obtained by a reporter by back­door means. I rather doubt that these figures are able to be hidden in your Government. This has not particularly shocked the Australian public but more confirmed what most have been thinking for some time. The real question which has been raised is‚ when your elected officials who have pledged to be upright and honest so obviously and systematically bilk the system to their personal benefit‚ and don’t even blush when caught‚ what other option is available ?
