Hello Im a Correctional Officer at a United State Penn. and I had a scary situation develove that if it had gone wrong I could have been hurt of possibly killed. Last week I was working a night shift and everything had gone slow (as usual) anyway it was about an hour before I got of shift so I was rather tired and not paying attention like I should have when I stopped an Inmate at a cell house door to search him. As I was searching him I felt something in his waste band and started to pull it out when the inmate turn and jumped back. This inmate had a homemade knife and did not want to get caught with it so he ran into the cell house and up three flights of stairs. I gave chase and could not call for assistance due to I not having a radio. As I ran up the stairs I yelled to other officers that I need assistance but nobody heard me. The inmate ran to the top of the stairs and stopped he turned around just as I was on the last flight of stairs and took the knife out of his waste band. I stopped and ordered the inmate to drop the knife and to my surprise he did and layed on the floor. I took a deep breath and proceeded to put hand restaints on him. After I took the inmate down the stairs he asked where were the other officers at and why hadnt they responded to my calls for help. The inmate thought that I had a radio and was calling for assistance on it and thought more officers were on their way up the stairs thats why he gave up so fast.
