It was an early Monday morning in the summer of 97. I was an intern working for Mobil Exploration in San Ardo California. Usually Mondays are the worst days for me but this Monday almost took my life. Everyday I commuted back and forth on highway 101. But this one particular day a coworker of mine was pulled over to the side of the road. I was thinking to myself "Oh Snap! I wonder if my boy Frank needs a ride to work?" Naturally I pulled over on the shoulder of the highway to see if he needed any help. Before I got out of my car I made sure to be as safe as possible. As soon as I stopped I looked behind me to see if any cars were coming (common sense). The only thing that was behind me was a big Semi Truck but he was in the fast lane. It was about 5:35 in the morning so it was still a little dark outside however Frank and I had our lights on. Since Franks lights and mine too were on I assumed the person driving the Semi saw us and that was the reason he moved to the fast lane. Well I got out of my car and was waving behind me to get Franks attention. I was about to approach him but as I moved toward him the Semi driver decided to change lanes on me. In addition to the switch he was traveling at a pretty high velocity damn fast if you ask me. The worst part about it was he decided to switch into the slow lane the lane closest to the shoulder where I was. I would have gotten back into my car but he was moving so fast I did not have the time. Hoping for the best I squeezed my body as close to the frame of the car as I could with the door behind me. I made sure that the door was not out in the slow lane but as the Semi went by I heard a big crunch and felt a hell of a breeze. I was expecting to see my door a hundred feet away but when I looked I found that it was still attached but it was against the fender. The glass from the window was all over the ground and on my seat. At first I was pissed off at myself for pulling over. But then later I realized that it was really early in the morning and those truck drivers sometimes will be driving all night long. So if that driver was sleepy one more inch toward the shoulder would have taken me out. So I now know how lucky I actually am. If there was one thing I learned from this situation it is .... ALWAYS be sure to keep a spare pair of underwear in the car because youll never know when youll need them. :)
