I was flying between Marquette Michigan and Chicago on Great Lakes flight 341. The little prop plane had 2 seats on each side of the narrow aisle‚ and it was very crowded. Next to me was a young female student returning home from college. She had boarded with a bag full of books‚ and a walking stick. She had snuggled up under a blanket as we taxied out to the end of the snowy runway. The engines were noisy and the vibration intense. Her eyes clenched as she knotted her body into a final convulsion and relaxed. We were airborne. As the vibration subsided‚ and she regained composure‚ she opened her eyes which met mine. I gave her a quick smile‚ and returned to my newspaper. She snuggled into my arm and fell asleep.
