It was February 6‚ 1973‚ a cold stormy winter night. The snow had been falling for several hours before I left work. The accumulations was about four inches. It was about 3AM‚ the roads were icey‚ I should have been going home‚ but decided it was time for the diner. Having been in the bar for over fourteen hours‚ it wasn’t a very smart decision. I didn’t get too far before losing control of the car on the icey roads. I crossed infront of oncoming traffic‚ sliding out of control‚ missing two or three cars. I wound up across the highway‚ the right rear quarter panel hitting a telephone pole‚ pin wheeling the car around‚ and having the front fender abruptly stopped by a tree‚ taking out three garbage cans on the way. I lay in the car semi conscious for a while until the police came. I was taken by ambulance to the closest hospital. Several Xrays were taken‚ but being under the influence‚ I wasn’t too cooperative with the doctors. Complaining of pain‚ I foolishly asked the doctor to give me a back massage. At that point I was released from the hospital. I was told that if it still bothered me the next day‚ I should return. Getting home wasn’t a pleasure‚ my brotherinlaw wasn’t happy about picking me up in the storm. And I was falling a lot too. He attributed it to being under the influence. The next day I wasn’t able to get out of bed in a normal fashion. I had to slide my body off the bed‚ to get on my knees‚ to get to a standing position. I bothered my brotherinlaw again‚ telling him that I had to go back to the hospital. Shortly after getting to the hospital‚ the Xrays were reviewed. Immediately‚ while on a guerney‚ sand bags were put on both sides of my neck. It seems that I was released from the hospital with five fractures of the cervical spine. I was lucky to not have been paralyzed for life. I stayed in the hospital for two months after having neck surgery. I learned two valueable lessons; don’t drink and drive and always get a second opinion.
