This may be viewed as boring but what I have to talk about is simply what Ive been spending my time working at for the last little while¸ I am employed by a software company that is developing a revolutionary program to estimate and bid on construction contracts¸ Not the most exciting topic I know but there is a lot of growth about to happen in this industry¸ A market research firm recently published that the AEC (Architectural Engineering and Contracting) industry will have spent over $4 billion dollars on technology and services in 1996¸ This figure will growth even more in the coming years¸ The new software that we are making will make estimating everything from sports stadiums to bungalows an easier and more importantly accurate process¸ The only problem is that the construction industry is probably one of the most lagged when it comes to taking advantage of computers and the internet¸ Right now blue prints made by an architect are plotted on huge sheets of paper sent to owners approved or adjusted sent back redone¸¸¸¸ etc¸ till they finally have a drawing they are happy with¸ The owners then ask for bids to build the contract receive the bids and finally draw up a working copy for the site¸ As you can imagine the paper trail of all this work is extraordinary¸ The irony is that the architects from the first line drawn do so using a CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) program ON THE COMPUTER!!! Few if any have seen or use the most simple and efficient tool that has been sitting right in front of them the whole time the internet¸ Every day billions upon billions of megabytes of data are traded and sent across the internet if only this industry would wake up and see how much money and time they could save by sending these CAD drawings over the internet they would Im sure be shocked¸ Not to mention that the success of our software depends on everyone coming to this realization¸
The beauty of the internet is that it isnt just for fun and games but is a serious tool for many many businesses in the 90s¸ Lets keep our fingers crossed this could mean my job! :)
