For the first time in the history of the world a species has the capability of annihilating not only all life on the planet but the planet itself. This is the awesome fact we as humans have faced for 52 years. This si the awesome fact that we will probably continue to face until the end of mankind which is also a possibility. Only the governments of a group of people or nations can decide if we will live or die. Nations are one of the groups of people that can utilize their weapons of mass destruction may it be the atom bomb the nuclear bomb or the hydrogen bomb or biochemical weapons. This conundrum that we face may eventually be our "Grim Reaper." A person who believes nations in the 20th century have been justified in developing and\or using weapons of mass destruction would believe in nationalism. They would believe in national security the protection of your nation They would believe in allied security the protection of a group of nations against a common enemy. They would also believe in national sovereignty where another nation cannot tell your nation what to do. A person who believes nations in the 20th century have not been justified in developing and\or using weapons of mass destruction would support internationalism. They would believe in humanitarianism or not treat any humans wrongfully. They would believe in peaceful coexistence where nations should work cooperatively where nations should get along. These people would also believe protection of life or preventing any living being from coming to harm. An alternative view would be that nations in the 20th century have been justified in developing and using weapons of mass destruction only when at war and the nations existence is at stake. Nations in the 20th century have not been justified in developing and\or using weapons of mass destruction under any circumstances. On August 6 1945 a plane took off from an airfield in the south Pacific. This plane was carrying a very special and unique cargo. This cargo was the accumulation of years of research and millions of dollars This cargo was an atomic bomb. By harnessing the energy of the atom Uranium235 this object could release power of catastrophic proportions. And it did several hundred feet over a mostly civilian population in the Japanese city of Hiroshima detecting only 3 planes overhead the Japanese citizens were not alarmed. The people near the flash point didnt get a chance to be alarmed they were vaporized instantly leaving behind only their imprinted shadows in the cement. Others died a more agonizing death as they stared at their skin dripping off their limbs. Still others died a longer death through radiation poisoning In the end tens of thousands died. Three days later the same horror took place on another mostly civilian target of Nagasaki. Their cries were ignored by the president of the United States; cries from a group of people who had already given up the fight. To add to the list of atrocities many people believe that those deaths those screams those cries were meant as a warning to the Soviets. There are many other nonlethal ways of telling another nation "dont tread on me." Looks like those methods werent to the Americans liking. In the early 1950s realizing that their enemies had matched their development in weaponry the Americans developed a new weapon. One with nearly one million times the intensity of the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. One which brought a whole new level to the term mass destruction. The Americans were trying to gain an advantage beyond the policy of deterrence and mutually assured destruction. Utilizing a nuclear fission reactor to create a nuclear fusion reaction the Hydrogen bomb instilled fear into the Soviet hearts which is exactly what the American wanted. What they didnt want was the USSR getting their own hydrogen bomb and then realizing their at another stalemate. By creating the hydrogen bomb the Americans made sure that if one Soviet soldier should shoot one NATO soldier everything on the planet would die. By the end of this paranoia we had enough firepower to kill every human being on the planet seven times. Recently many nations in 1996 signed the full test ban treaty. A document stating that all the signatory nations would no longer test nuclear weapons anywhere. France however disobeyed this treaty and the world didnt like it. France is saying that no other nation or nations can tell it what to do therefore it continued its nuclear testing in an area of the South Pacific it controlled and exploded their nuclear bombs under water. Many nations have offered their readings on tests done in the past but the French refuse saying "We want to do our own tests." We have already eradicated parts of our own planet more explosions mean more radioactive particles releasing deadly alpha beta and gamma rays for tens of thousands of years. Many years from now we will probably look aback and think that there is a remarkable similarity between the french government and a giant pompous *SS. Countries of this century have not been right in developing and\or using weapons that result in massive death. In the dropping of the Abombs on Japan in 1945 the Americans faith in national security cost the lives of thousands of innocent lives. The people responsible must face the crimes. Humanitarianism would have allowed Japan to be far from successful today and this way they could have helped Many. Though allied security Americans developed the hydrogen bomb and instilled fear into hearts of people generation after generation. Had the Americans used peaceful coexistence tension would not have resulted in decades of phobia. Thanks to the french testing and their belief in national sovereignty their helping dig mankinds grave a little deeper. If they valued protection of life they could devote their resources to something more useful like helping find the cure for cancer. By developing or using weapons of mass destruction countries of the past have been doing the wrong thing William Shalespeare once said "What piece of work is a man. How noble in reason. How infinite in faculty. In action how like an angle. In apprehension how like a god." If he could see us today he would be ashamed of what he wrote. We dont deserve such praise. And for what we did we never will.
