Well its not so much that I want to complain. I already have. But I would like to tell you about it. I work for a State Agency in Florida. Recently there was an incident that developed because a woman collegue started to breastfeed her child in her supervisors office. She had just returned to work after a too short maternity leave and her husband had brought the baby by. Several people were shocked and one in particular was rather vocal about how offended she was. The new mother eventually put away her breast and went about her business after her husband took the baby home. The next day someone hung a photo trying to be funny on the door of the woman who had been so shocked. It was a model from a Victorias Secret catalogue and had a cut out picture of a baby pasted on the models breast. A large circle painted around the model indicated "No Breastfeeding". The other women were delighted by this joke. The mother didnt see it. At first. Several weeks later the picture resurfaced on the back of the door of the nursing mother. It was claimed later that this was an accident. That a woman who used to occupy that office had salvaged the joke and put it on the back of her door. Mom moved in and didnt notice at first that the photo was still there. But Mutter didnt react like this was harmless. She had picked up on the negativity when she had attempted to breastfeed and she felt that this was a very serious complaint against her and her baby. She complained to her supervisor. She said that she only wanted to bring this out in the open and have an apology. Two weeks later she asked her supervisor again. He said he had talked to his supervisor and there was nothing to be done. So she went over his head to the next higher up. This resulted in the Inspector Generals office getting involved. Whooee!! Nobody expected that!! It is very ironic that on the weekend of Lady Dis death Veterans Day Weekend I believe it was another colleague of ours had committed suicide after being charged with sexual harrassment. The ironic thing is that the Inspector Generals office didnt bother to investigate THAT. But it is related to the story because the State Agency had started sending in a mental health counselor to help us sort out any grief or guilt any of us might feel from the suicide. They called it "debriefing" a very military term I thought. I wouldve preferred degriefing. Oh well. So here comes the therapist back for a second visit and wants to know how things have progressed since her last visit. She learns all about the new investigation and the animosity that has been building. She asks us to go around the room and say how we are feeling. The woman who was originally so offended says she thinks the nursing mother should apologize to her for nursing in her supervisors office in the first place. That was it for me. Now I have to tell you that most people in our unit were out that day for one reason or another. It so happens that I was the only male with six females including the therapist and they all seem to be nodding that Mom ought to apologize for nursing her baby. I let them have it with both barrells. I told them we live in a sick society and that anyone who is offended by breastfeeding is sick as well. All the time I was wondering how come the only male there is saying this. It was NOT for any prurient reason nor was I accused of that thought the women for the most part were enraged by my speech. I went home for lunch did a search on the Net God love the Net! found a lawyers page who works for La Leche on which the Florida Breastfeeding law was quoted and printed it out. It clearly states that not only can a woman not be charged with a crime but it is illegal to hinder her and that she has every right to breastfeed in public or private showing nipple inadvertanly or not whenever she chooses. There are fourteen laws with such states. Good old Florida. I gave the article to the nursing mother. Whew. Long story eh? Just had to get that off my chest hehe.
