A great moment that I will never forget happened over 20 years ago. I had worked for over 4 years to make it to the State pole vaulting championship. My family had come from all over the state to watch me in my final meet of my career. I was favored to win having vaulted the highest in the state that year the weekend before but the weather conditions were so bad that I had already missed on 2 attempts and only had 1 more attempt left. The height was only 12 feet well under my personal best but if I did not make this final attempt I would be out and my career over without obtaining my goal of a state championship. My If I make it I win the meet since I am the only vaulter left without 3 misses. I approach the runway take off and give it one last chance. I hit the box hard but a little off stride the pole bends and I am thrust over the bar feet firstbut as I turn at the top of my vault my chest is coming down on the bar... then it happened a shrill voice from the stands yells at me "DAVID!!".. it is my mother and I bend my back qucikly just in time to miss the bar and win the meet! I will never forget that moment.
